Severe toothache

Call the clinic. While you get an appointment, follow these steps to ease it without making things worse.

1Rinse with warm water and floss in case there's trapped food

3Apply cold to the outside of the cheek, never heat or anything directly on the gum

4Avoid chewing on that side until we see you

Broken or chipped tooth

A knock or biting something hard can chip a tooth. The sooner we see you, the easier it usually is to rebuild it.

1Rinse your mouth with warm water

2If you still have the fragment, keep it in a little milk or saline solution

3Apply cold to the outside of the area to reduce swelling

4If the edge is sharp, cover it with dental wax or sugar-free gum

• Bring the fragment if you have it: it can sometimes be reattached to the tooth itself.

Abscess

An abscess is an infection: it doesn't go away on its own and can spread if the cause isn't treated.

1You can take your usual painkiller following the leaflet instructions

2Apply cold to the outside; never heat, as it encourages the infection

3Don't put aspirin or any painkiller directly on the gum

4Call the clinic: the infection needs its cause treated, not just the symptom eased

Knocked-out tooth

Time outside the mouth is critical. If it's a permanent tooth, acting within the first few minutes matters a great deal.

1Hold it by the crown, never by the root

It depends on whether it's a baby tooth or a permanent one. A baby tooth knocked out by a knock isn't reimplanted: you just need to check no fragments remain and come in for a check-up. A permanent tooth can be reimplanted if you act quickly: hold it by the crown (never by the root), if it's dirty rinse it only with water or saline without rubbing it, try to put it back in place, and if that's not possible, keep it in a glass of milk or saliva and come to the clinic immediately.
