How often you should have a dental cleaning
The general recommendation, backed by both the American Dental Association and the Spanish Society of Periodontology (SEPA), is to attend a check-up every 6 months to assess whether a professional cleaning is needed. The Spanish General Council of Dentists agrees with the same guideline: at least once a year, ideally every six months, as the interval that allows accumulated tartar to be removed and any problem to be caught at an early stage, when it is easier and cheaper to treat.
When it's worth shortening the interval to 3–4 months
Not every patient needs the same rhythm. If you're wearing orthodontic braces, the appliance makes daily hygiene harder and encourages plaque to build up around each bracket, so it's common to adjust cleanings to every 3–4 months for the duration of treatment. The same applies if you smoke, have diabetes, a history of periodontitis or a high tendency to build up tartar: in these cases, waiting 6 months can let subgingival tartar reach a depth that's harder to treat between visits.

What a professional cleaning includes
A professional dental cleaning (scale and polish) uses ultrasound to remove supragingival and subgingival tartar that a toothbrush and floss can't reach, finishing with a polish of the tooth surface. Depending on the case, it may also include a fluoride treatment to strengthen the enamel. It isn't the same as whitening: cleaning makes the mouth healthy, it doesn't lighten the tooth's natural colour.
